The Positive and Negative Effects of Media

Our life will remain incomplete without the media. The radio, television, newspaper and internet are some forms through which we get information. Just like other fields, a vast development is seen in media fields also. The common people believe the news given by the media. So, the media should be very careful before giving any news to the public. They have to cover important happenings, in all the fields, around the world. There is no use in creating emotional feelings among public by exaggerating the happenings and giving sensational news. The media persons should be cautious in giving unbiased news to the common persons.

The media covers news of public interest such as political happenings, sports, city news, national news, international news, business, education, entertainment, literature and medical news. The news should satisfy all men, women and children of various age-group and status. To increase circulation of newspapers, the media people should not publish bogus news.

Negative Effects of the Media

The Negative Effects of Media Violence on Children

It is everywhere you look. Turn on the television, it’s there. Go to a movie, it’s there. Even a cartoon that a five year old watches is filled with it. Media violence. Movie plots often revolve around violence and television programs are making violence increasingly more popular. The witnessing of daily acts of violence is now taking a toll on the youth of today.

By the time a child turns 18, they will have witnessed 16,000 murders and 200,000 acts of violence on television alone. Often times, these programs do not show the consequences of these acts of violence, either. Only five percent of children’s programs depict the long-term consequences of aggressive behavior. In addition, 58 percent of the time the victims were not shown suffering from pain. Therefore, the children who watch these programs will think that there is no consequences for resorting to violence
In today’s society children spend approximately 28 to 32 hours a week watching television or going to the movies. This is the same amount of time they spend on an average week in school. Undoubtedly, this makes the media one of the most influential forces in a children’s life because of the time spent in front of the screen. What children see and hear in a movie or television show, they are more than likely to imitate. In a study by epidemiologist Brandon Centerwall, who surveyed a group of men imprisoned for violent crime, he found nearly one-third of the felons had consciously imitated a crime technique that they saw in the media. The fact is children learn more about life through television than any other source.

An additional negative effect of
media violence is the probability of the children becoming more aggressive later in life. In a study by The American Psychological Association, homicide rates more then.

Negative Influences of Media:

When you try to imitate your role models of the glamor industry, are you thoughtful enough to distinguish between the right and the wrong? It is often seen that young girls and boys imitate their role models blindly. The negative things the celebrities do are often talked about. The controversies in the lives of the celebrities are often highlighted by the media. This leads to a blind imitation of what appears in the news.

Media often hypes the scintillating things about the celebrities. The negatives in society are highlighted with an intent to awaken the people about the society of the modern days. But this hype is actually having a negative effect on society. Masses are seeing only the negatives around them. Controversies are constantly being bombarded on them. All this is responsible for influencing the society negatively.

Some say that it is media to be blamed for the eating disorders in the youths of society as also for the unhealthy lifestyle that has recently emerged. Be it television, magazines or the Internet, media is almost omnipresent, affecting various aspects of our life. The products advertised by the media and the ways they are advertised are bound to affect the practices of the youths.

The negative effects of media on children are manifested in terms of their changing mental setup and the declining quality of their lifestyle. Children, who should invest their time in reading good books, studying, playing outdoors, exercising and engaging in social activities, today, spend their evenings glued to the television. The Internet that is easily accessible to even small children, exposes them to things they need not know and will not understand.

Media affects the physical well-being of individuals to a certain extent. People spending hours in front of a television or surfing the Internet have to suffer from eye problems and obesity. Long hours of media exposure add to the sedentary nature of your lifestyle.

The negative psychological effects of media are seen in terms of media changing the people's outlook of looking towards life. Media being one of the prominent sources of looking at the outside world has changed the cultural and moral values of society. A majority of the audiences believe in what is depicted by the media. Many think all of it as true. Youngsters and children are bound to mix the reel and the real world and get highly influence by the mass media.

While a certain amount of exposure to the ever-evolving media is essential for introducing ourselves to the world outside, an excessive one is detrimental to the overall well-being of society.

Role Of Media In Modern Society:
There are many different ways in which people communicate such as, through the phone, through personal encounters, and by attending work place, school, seminars etc. Though media is not the only communication medium used to dispense the flow of information, its importance in developed countries is worth mentioning as it has been the main source to inform people on political issues or current affairs as well as being as the main source of entertainment. The flow of information from one geographical location to another has increased in speed considerably with the advent in digitally enabled communication devices. Different network channels over cable or satellite TV, newspapers and radio channels are emerging at a very rapid pace providing the people with a medium to connect themselves with the outside world. Print media has always been a dominant medium throughout the decades in the western civilization, but it is the emergence of the television which has become the backbone of the global commercial development. Television contains the ability to produce multimedia content and thus has the immense power to change an individual's perception of reality. It is of no wonder that in order to believe in something, one has to have complete faith in the source of information. This source of information could be ranging from one person to any academic institution.   However   in today's connected society it is the media, which has become the main source of information The role media is playing as being the main source of information is a controversial issue.   It is being debated what are the media functions in a society and what are its impact on an individual. The term media is a general term which is not restricted to a particular entity but in order to understand the term "commercial media", the US provides the best platform for critically analyzing the role of media in a society. Regardless of what type of sources of media are analyzed from newspapers to network channels,...

When you see some stunt in a movie, do you feel like doing it? Do you always feel like being as fashionable as your favorite film actress? Do you often feel like copying the hairstyle that your favorite television actor sports? I am sure some of the girls among you have often made attempts to walk like some famous ramp models. I am sure some of you guys have always wanted to wear what some of the top actors of the industry do! And now, do you say the media does not influence you? Sure it does! Mass media affects the ways in which the masses think and act. It influences the behavior of its audiences both positively and negatively. The positive effects are surely celebrated by one and all. But there is a need to prevent the media from having a negative influence on society. Let us try to explore some of the negative influences of media.

IN THE world of today, media has become almost as necessary as food and clothing. It is true that media is playing an outstanding role in strengthening the society; it’s a mirror of the society. Its duty is to inform, educate and entertain the people. They help us to know what’s going on around the world. They put their lives in danger during attacks or natural disasters, just to inform us of the situation. It is partly because of them that awareness is spreading in the society. It is the media who shape our lives. Our lives would be incomplete without the media.

Media is the watch dog of the political democracy. If it plays its role honestly, it will be a great force in building the nation but now a days, media has become a commercialized sector eying only for news that is hot and sells. Instead of giving important information and educative programmed, all that one gets on television is sensational depiction of all news stories, their only goal being gaining television rating points (TRPs)..

Every issue is hyped for a day or two, so much so that you switch to any channel, they all will be flashing the same story but then when the heat is over there is no following of the case. The news then jostles for space with other stories that are carrying the heat then. Inspire we all cannot think of a world without television sets, media has become so much a part of us that to recognize its impact, we need to step back and consciously think about how they shape our lives and what they are saying.

The media affects people’s perspective not only through television, but also through radio and newspapers. In this way, even many messages, with which we cannot agree, inevitably coming to us from diverse constellations of media.. They can even be turned to our benefit by whetting our understanding and articulation of what we believe, today news channels and even some newspapers is mouthpiece of some political parties. Their work then, limits only to spread the ideology of the party rather than give correct news. People have to judge on their own by looking and listening to different channels for the same news and then form a conclusion.

Media is an integral part of our society, but that’s also a fact that its too much intervention in everything is a matter of concern. Sometimes, just for making money, insignificant news is given so much priority that the real news is not even brought into notice. Yes, it does also entertain but again it’s a debatable issue because by ’entertainment’ we mean healthy entertainment and not those nonsense TV serials. So at last, like science it is a tool, which we have to use by our judgment to provide maximum satisfaction side by side without harming ourselves. Sometimes, some channels also broadcast and publish the messages in such situation that the real messages are left beyond our hands. The other disadvantage is that some times they also publish or broadcast some vulgar news, and sometimes unessential activities are served as very important news and broadcasted again and again. This does not broaden the reach of media.

In spite of being sensational and biased, the significant of media can not be ignored, especially in an age, in which globalization and liberalization have become the order of the day. In this globalized world, task and duties of media are increasing day by day. There is still a lot to be done by the media for the betterment of the society.
